Fibromyalgia Disability Deserves a Disability Benefit

5 stars Avg. rating: 5 from 2 votes.

Fibromyalgia disability has caused skepticism in the eyes of the Social Security Administration. Although many of those with this condition file for disability benefits, only few cases successfully receive benefits. There could be many reasons to back up for this problem. For one, there is no listing in the Social Security’s Listing of Impairments Manual, a manual that contains the lists of illnesses acceptable for disability, for fibromyalgia disability. However, most importantly, there is no denying that this does not change the fact that this illness does hinder people from being able to work.

In addition, the symptoms and causes of fibromyalgia differ from one person to the other. This is why it is hard to determine if the level of hindrance to one’s ability to work will qualify them for disability benefits. Considering this fact, to win a fibromyalgia disability benefit case, it would be very beneficial if you have some other medical diagnosis along with Fibromyalgia disability to strengthen and to add more viability to the case. In addition, a fibromyalgia diagnosis made by an Orthopedist or a Rheumatologist will receive greater attention by the Social Security Administration compared to the ones made only by a family doctor.

To fully understand the condition as to why many individuals claiming for disability benefits having fibromyalgia are denied, let us first know what it is. The American College of Rheumatism viewed fibromyalgia as a rheumatological illness, which is a matter of sore muscles. Of course, if you are suffering from this condition, you cannot expect other people to see you as disabled, can you? Little that most people know of, you may be silently suffering from this illness. This is why fibromyalgia is sometimes called invisible disability for it is impossible for casual observers to detect. You may look fine from the outside, but deep inside the disabling condition is tearing you apart.

For many individuals with fibromyalgia disability, their increased sensitivity to pain has something to do with the muscles only. However, for many others, increased sensitivity may also include a much wider range of symptoms such as:

  • Reduced physical stamina and fatigue
  • Non-restorative sleep
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Chronic headache
  • Impaired memory and concentration
  • Orthostatic hypotension and /or postural orthostatic tachycardia
  • Vulvodynia
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Anxiety disorder and/or depression

Because fibromyalgia disability is an invisible condition, there is no question why SSA requires proper documentation of diagnosis have to be submitted to qualify for a disability benefit claim. Therefore, in order for you to be granted appropriate fibromyalgia disability benefits, make sure you have the necessary medical files to back up your claim. Otherwise, you will end up one of those who lose the battle against the fight in getting your disability benefits. You wouldn’t want that to happen, would you?
