Four Things to Tell Your Family about Indigestion

Not Rated stars Avg. rating: Not Rated from 0 votes.

Although most people know all about indigestion and many of them have experienced it at one time or another, they really might not understand it fully until they have known someone who has chronic problems with acid reflux or indigestion. Therefore, if you are newly diagnosed with chronic indigestion or acid reflux, your family might have some questions and concerns. Here are four things you might want to tell them so they can better understand what you are dealing with.

Your Diet Will Change

After your diagnosis, your doctor will likely tell you what you need to do in order to feel better. Once of the biggest changes in your life will likely be your diet. You will need to explain this to your family. For instance, they may wonder why all of a sudden you cannot eat pizza or ice cream every Friday. Your children will likely have a more difficult time relating and adults will likely be able to understand immediately. So, simply explain that those types of foods make you feel ill and you want to feel good, so you are going to avoid them as much as possible.

Your Symptoms May Affect Your Day

Another thing you might want to address with your family is that your daily schedule might be affected by your indigestion. For example, you might need to start eating dinner earlier in the day to avoid nighttime indigestion. In addition, you might feel ill when you first wake up and need extra time to get yourself together before tackling the day. Your family will feel better if they know what to expect, so be sure to let them in on these things. Otherwise they will likely just worry about you.

Your Mood Might Be Stressed

When you suffer from chronic indigestion you likely will have times and day that you just don’t feel well. It is not a good thing to go through the symptoms. It can be stressful to deal with physical discomfort and you may even feel like you really cannot eat anything without having symptoms. Therefore, you need to explain to your family that there will be days when you are not feeling well. They will probably be more understanding with your moodiness if they know ahead of time what to look for.

They Should Be Supportive

Last, but certainly not least, you need to let your family know that you need their support. When you have people with you reminding you that you should stick to your diet for your own health, it becomes easier to do that. When they are there reminding you to take your medication or that you should use an extra pillow at night, you will be grateful. They may not want to jump in, unless invited to do so. So, make sure you tell them you would appreciate their help and encouragement.

Overall, it is great when you can share your condition with your family. It will be less overwhelming and less scary when you have someone on your side. So, be sure you explain these things to them and let them in on what you are going through. Everything will be worth it and attainable when you have a helping hand.
